Korkyra was the daughter of Assopos River and the Nymph Metope. According to the ancient Greek mythology, Poseidon, the mighty god of seas, fell in love with the beautiful nymph, he kidnapped her and brought her to an island, known today as Corfu. From their union, a child was born, named Phaeax, from whom the inhabitants of the island later took their name, Phaeacians. Phaeacians enjoyed good food, baths, love, singing and dancing, while according to the ancient poet Homer, they had received Odysseus as guest just before he arrived to his homeland Ithaca.
